Celebrating Matariki at SkyCity
Daily, until 17 July 2022
Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori | Happy Matariki!
Matariki is a special occasion which marks the start of the Maori New Year. This year, Matariki will rise in the dawn sky from Tuesday 21 June.
This rising of Matariki, is a time to remember those that have been lost, to reflect on the past year, celebrate the present, and plan for the year ahead.
In celebration of Matariki this year, we've partnered with Hamilton Central to be part of a star walk through Hamilton CBD.
During this self guided walk, visit each of the star locations listed below, where you'll be able to learn more about the magical stories of the seven stars of the Matariki cluster.
Ururangi (located at The Meteor); connected to the wind
Waipuna-aa-rangi (located at Waikato Museum); connected to the rain, mist and fog
Waitii (located at The Bearded Weasel); connected to freshwater food
Waitaa (located at Bowl and Social); connected to saltwater food
Matariki (located at Hamilton City Library); connected to health and wellbeing
Tupu-aa-nuku (located at Hamilton Central Business Association); connected to food sources of the Earth
Tupu-aa-rangi (located at Centre Place Shopping Centre); connected to food sources of the sky
Te Whāngai i nga whetu – Feeding the stars
Recognising the importance of food and nutrients, this concept is about bringing bounty into the new year. To celebrate, the team at Eat Burger were inspired by Tupu-aa-nuku to create a special burger called Poaka Me Te Puha.
Plus, we've got activity books available in Bowl and Social to enhance your knowledge about the Maori New Year, so make sure to grab one when you visit us or download it using the link below!
